Hudson House

Built in just four months, a home in Claverack, NY known at the Hudson Passive Project has just become the first passive house in NY State to be certified by Passive House Institute U.S.  To achieve this, the home had to adhere to the requirement of reducing 90% energy consumption without relying on any onsite energy generation such as from solar panels, wind turbines or geothermal heat pumps.

According to architect Dennis Wedlick “the windows—SeriousWindows—turned out to be the key factor between success and failure.”  The Hudson House’s double-height glass wall on the south side of the structure serves both functional and aesthetic purposes: it allows the winter sun to passively heat the home during the cold New York winters, and it infuses the traditional barn-style structure with a modern twist.  Series 725 windows from SeriousWindows (now Alpen high performance Products) were used for this purpose.
